Perfect Paint Palette

The time had come.....I had to pick the final colors for the interior of the house. Picking the paint for the interior of a single room is overwhelming for me. So when the painter asked for the final choices of the entire house.......ahhhh!!! I knew it had to be done, it's just so hard! Why is picking paint so hard?! I will tell you why! The undertones, the lighting, the warmth, the coolness, the way the house faces, the factors that need to be considered are right up there with sending a shuttle to NASA. OK not really, but you get the point. But I did it, I finally did it, I picked the perfect paint palette for our house. I want a warm, soft neutral feel for the walls of our home. After many trips to Sherwin Williams, hours googling and researching various colors, many hours watching YouTube videos, and falling asleep cuddling the sample book....I am done. Paint colors are picked!

I picked the walls of the main rooms of the house first. They will be Sherwin Williams Pure White. It is one of the most popular and versatile white paint colors. It has a tiny, tiny blip of black and an even tinier drop of yellow to give it warmth and make it a white that pairs well with most colors. It is not a true white, it is soft, but does not look as creamy as the other whites. Pure White pairs so good with other colors that I am letting the sheen do the work and using it for the walls, trim, and ceilings of most rooms. Those rooms include the living room, kitchen, breakfast room, laundry room, all bathrooms and hallways.

For the primary bedroom I am going with Cotton from the Emerald Designer Edition, not to be confused with Cotton White, which has a lot of yellow in it for me. The Emerald line really takes the color up a notch and the Cotton from this line is a warm white with a very muted cream undertone. I will paint the entire room this color and again let the sheen do the work. I want a romantic, cozy feel to this room.

For the bonus/theatre room, which has no windows, I am going with Dovetail. It is a warm gray paint color, which means it has a softer look than the traditional cool gray colors. Dovetail does have a bit of a purple undertone that can even have a flash of green. Since there are no windows in this room I am not too worried about the subtle undertones. This room will again be painted one color with various sheens for the trim and ceiling.

I wanted to paint the rest of the bedrooms and flex room all the same color so I went with Aesthetic White. It might look like a simple off-white, but it’s actually a beige paint color that leans slightly into gray. A lot of people like to use this color when they want something a little lighter than Accessible Beige, a very popular color from Sherwin Williams. Aesthetic White doesn't have the typical golden feel that a lot of paint colors have and lacks strong undertones. And it will look great with Pure White on the trim and ceiling!

Finally I choose Agreeable Gray, the best-selling paint color of Sherwin Williams, for the home gym. It is the perfect complement to just about anything. With a beige undertone, this gray exudes a subtle warmth. It will be the perfect color to not make the large room feel cold. And with all the natural light the room has it will look great! FYI It is not recommended in a room with low light.

P.S. In case you were wondering about my sheens: I am doing flat for the ceilings, satin for the walls, and semi-gloss for trim.

Lastly, I leave you with this....always get a sample and try the color you are thinking about in your room. Go back and look at it during various times throughout the day and on sunny and cloudy days.

Hope this helps and happy painting!!
